Call for Stories ~ Sharing Stories of Advocacy

Through the Multi-year Strategy to Address Violence in Schools, ETFO has provided information, resources, and support to ETFO members, so that they will better understand their right to be safe from violence at work, and how to assert their rights.

As we add to the new video series in the Action on Violence Toolkit, we are gathering information about the experiences of members who have been successful in pushing back against the unacceptable violence at work. Stories are powerful teaching tools and sharing these experiences with the wider membership will encourage and empower members to stand up for themselves, their coworkers, and their students.

Examples of success stories could be:

  • Raising concerns with administrators that led to improved protections
  • Collaborating with school team, families, outside resources to support a student
  • Raising concerns or making recommendations to a joint health and safety committee
  • Exercising the right to refuse unsafe work, or indicating a plan to refuse
  • Involvement of the Ministry of Labour through a work refusal
  • A successful complaint to the Ministry of Labour
  • Any other action taken to reduce violence and keep workers safe

You are all aware of such stories. Please consider sharing your stories.  They deserve to be told. You can share your experiences at this link. Stories used will be edited to remove details that could identify a member, student, or school.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact Elizabeth Mitchell, emitchell@etfo.org.
